In recent days, one word you have come across very frequently is Metaverse (off-course it is 2nd in the list as ‘Corona’ dominates ). This phrase has been quite popular in crypto, fintech, as well as social media. So, what exactly is this Metaverse? Why everyone(read as majority) is talking about this lately and Facebook starts calling itself as a Metaverse company. Let’s take a look and see what Metaverse actually is ..

What is Metaverse?

As a typical Indian student, first let see what wikipedia tells about Metaverse. According to Wikipedia “A Metaverse is a persistent online virtual environment that incorporates a broad range of Internet functions. In futurism, the term is often described as a hypothetical iteration of the Internet as a virtual world that is facilitated by the use of virtual and augmented reality headsets.”

But i defer with this. Metaverse is not Virtual Reality. VR is just a way to experience the Metaverse. There are so many people participating in the virtual worlds without using VR/AR headset.

And, NO Metaverse is not just a video game. There will be games in the Metaverse but Metaverse itself is not a game.

💡
Science fiction author Neal Stephenson coined the term “metaverse” in his 1992 cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, presenting a 3D virtual world in which people, represented as avatars, could interact with each other and artificially intelligent agents

Even after quite a bit of searching, I didn't get any real/specific definition for Metaverse (As baba Ranchoddas says, what is there in those definitions. You should understand in simple way ).

Silicon Valley Metaverse proponents sometimes reference a description from venture capitalist Matthew Ball, author of the extensive Metaverse Primer:

“The Metaverse is an expansive network of persistent, real-time rendered 3D worlds and simulations that support continuity of identity, objects, history, payments, and entitlements, and can be experienced synchronously by an effectively unlimited number of users, each with an individual sense of presence.”

Facebook, the tech company with the biggest stake in the Metaverse, describes it more simply:

“The ‘metaverse’ is a set of virtual spaces where you can create and explore with other people who aren’t in the same physical space as you.”

Just think that Metaverse is a new version of Internet (Earlier it was web 1.0, and web 2.0 - what we are using currently and this will be the new a Web 3.0 don't know yet). A new kind of environment for immersive social sharing. It is an alternative to the real universe, It features digital avatars, digital objects, interoperable assets ypi can run business in this virtual world, buy properties, host events, a digital reality.

Do you know Facebook owns a VR headset brand “Oculus”)

Still confused with what a Metaverse is? Is everything read till now went over head? Let me know (you have my email in contact). I’ll try put a simplified post explaining this again.
