What do (es) I (a) (Business Analyst) Do?

In the earlier post, you have read who is a Business Analyst (BA). A BA is the one who fills gap between Business and Technology.But, what does a Business Analyst (I) really do? (and definitely these will vary from organisation to organisation).

Do I really tell 👨🏻‍💻programmes what to do? No.. (and sort of...Yes). I don’t tell them what to do but i just describe and 📜 document (which they don’t read most of the time) a 📠 system which they need to produce (or a improve the system which is already there)

In most of the organisations, BA will hold a very broad role which will not be specific to any limited domain and they don’t work only on software solutions. With these broad roles and overlapping responsibilities, they will always be BUSY ..!!

Let’s take an example of a Dine-In 🍱 restaurant, a BA will do the exact job an Order Taker will do in those restaurants.

What does the Order taker do?

1. Take food orders from the customers (Like, Masala Dosa roasted with less oil and some extra red chutney)
2. Tell this order to a Chef
3. Check if Chef has prepared same as customer ordered
4. Serve to customer

So, What do I do as a BA?

1. Take orders (requirements / business needs) from customers (read as Stakeholders/Business - it sounds more corporate)
2. Tell the development team about the requirements (this is where the documentation part comes. which needs to be precise and unambiguous)
3. Check if the team has development the solution as per requirements
4. Deliver it to business

Looks Simple right? filling the gap between Business and Technology (just imagine if the oil was little more or red chutney was less in that Dosa)

But you need to have a certain skills to fill that gap. (and i was thinking what i write in my next post 😜)
