Who am I? I mean, Who is a Business Analyst?
When I started my career (after my post graduation), I joined a startup IT company as Business Analyst. Yes I was happy but I felt a bit irritated 😫 whenever I told anyone (even for some of the clients of my company) that I'm a Business Analyst. Not because of my job but because most of them were not aware of the role and every time i have to explain my role. But now the scenario is little different, people have at-least have some vague idea on what a business analyst does and needs for them. If you’re also wondering who the Business Analyst is, here is a small gist of Who am I? I mean, who is a Business Analyst.
Emergence of a Business Analyst role
In the earlier programming days (as early as around 1960’s or 70’s), development was happening with the latest technology but without considering the necessity and relevance of it. Which made customers unhappy, products developed were not solving all the problems for business. With this alarm, System analysts were brought in place to convert the requirements into line of code. Though this brought some process in place, still the systems were getting developed in an un-organised way. System analysts were good at designing the system and handling all the technicalities but what they lacked was business acumen. There was a gap between Business and Technology. This is the salt missing from these systems to be more productive and business to reach their full potential. And the role who will bridge this gap is....ta da... Business Analysts
Then, Who am I 🦸🏻? Who is a Business Analyst?
As I mentioned above, as a Business Analyst - I fill the gap between Business and Technology. Business analyst also helps organizations to document business processes by assessing the business model and its integration with technology. Engage with business to understand requirements to drive changes required in process, products, services to improve efficiencies and add value.
One most challenging and fun work I do is to Articulate business ideas to validate against technical feasibility and balance if they are functionally and financially reasonable. (This is where the business acumen comes handy 😀)
International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) mentions that The Business Analyst is an agent of change. Business Analysis is a disciplined approach for introducing and managing change to organizations, whether they are for-profit businesses, governments, or non-profits.
The role of a business analyst is constantly evolving and changing. Every company has their own definition for a Business Analyst. Every company wants different issues that a business analyst can address, whether it’s dealing with outdated legacy systems, changing technologies, broken processes, poor client or customer satisfaction or siloed large organisations.
